Nestled in the heart of Halberton, The Barge is perfectly placed for exploring some of Mid Devon's most beautiful countryside, historic attractions and family-friendly days out. Whether you're stopping by after a canal walk, taking a break on a cycle ride or planning a day of exploring around Tiverton, you'll find a warm welcome, great food and a well-earned drink waiting just around the corner.

Just 200 metres from the Grand Western Canal

We're proud to be featured on the Grand Western Canal Country Park website, and it's easy to see why. Just a two-minute walk (200 metres) from our door, the canal offers over 11 miles of peaceful towpaths, stunning countryside, abundant wildlife and one of Devon's most scenic places to walk.
Look out for kingfishers, herons, dragonflies and swans as you wander along the water, or enjoy the famous horse-drawn barge experience for a truly unique Devon day out. The nearby Swan's Neck Circular Walk is a favourite with locals and visitors alike, offering beautiful views across the countryside before leading you back towards Halberton.

A perfect stop on National Cycle Route 3

If you're exploring Devon on two wheels, The Barge is an ideal place to refuel. National Cycle Network Route 3 passes right by the pub, following much of the Grand Western Canal and making it one of the area's most popular routes for leisure cyclists, families and long-distance riders.
We've installed secure bike racks for up to 10 bicycles, so you can park up, relax with a refreshing drink, enjoy a hearty meal and continue your journey with confidence.

Explore Historic Tiverton

Just a short drive away, Tiverton is packed with history and independent charm. Discover Tiverton Castle, a fascinating medieval fortress with beautiful gardens, browse the independent shops at Tiverton Pannier Market, or visit the Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life, home to the famous Tivvy Bumper steam engine.

National Trust & Family Days Out

There's even more to discover within a short drive of The Barge. Wander the spectacular gardens and woodland trails at Knightshayes Court, enjoy a nostalgic day at the Devon Railway Centre, or let the whole family have fun at Diggerland Devon, where children and adults alike can drive real construction machinery.

Hidden Gems Around Halberton

While you're here, don't miss St Andrew's Church, a beautiful 14th-century church at the heart of the village, or take in the stunning views towards the Blackdown Hills while walking or cycling along the canal.

Whether you're visiting for a leisurely walk, a countryside cycle, a family adventure or a day exploring Mid Devon, The Barge is the perfect place to start, finish or pause your journey with delicious food, refreshing drinks and a genuine Devon welcome.
